Christians study the Bible because God has spoken and because the Bible testifies of Christ. Study is not a substitute for faith, prayer, obedience, or gathering with believers. It is one of the means by which God gives truth, corrects error, strengthens faith, and forms holy lives.
READ THE KEY PASSAGES
Begin with what
Scripture says.
Acts 17:11They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Psalm 119:11Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
2 Timothy 3:15The holy scriptures... are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
01
Study lets us know the Christ Scripture reveals
John 5:39Search the scriptures... they are they which testify of me.
Jesus said the Scriptures testify of Him. A person can use biblical language while inventing a Christ who fits personal preference. Careful study returns the reader to the Son God has actually revealed: true God, true man, crucified, risen, reigning, and coming again.
The aim is not merely to collect facts. It is to know God through His Word and to receive Christ by faith rather than by imagination.
Because all Scripture testifies of Christ, study must be more than collecting verses or winning arguments. It should bring the reader again and again to the Savior God has revealed rather than to a Christ shaped by personal preference.
02
Study tests teachers and claims
Romans 10:17Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
The Bereans did not reject preaching, but they tested what they heard by the Scriptures. This protects the church from error, spiritual manipulation, and the habit of accepting a confident voice without asking what God has said.
A Christian should test this website, every sermon, every tradition, and every claim of guidance by Scripture. Study makes discernment possible, while humility keeps discernment from becoming pride.
The Bereans provide a needed balance: they received teaching with readiness, yet tested it by Scripture. That pattern guards against both gullibility and a proud spirit that refuses correction.
03
Study feeds faith and holiness
Psalm 119:105Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. The Word also exposes sin, gives wisdom, and teaches believers how to walk in a dark world. It reaches private thought as well as public belief.
This does not mean every reading session feels dramatic. God often uses steady, patient attention to His Word to correct a mind, strengthen conviction, and prepare a believer for temptation or suffering.
Patient reading often bears fruit over time rather than all at once. The Word takes root as believers return to it, pray over it, remember it, and let it correct the habits of the heart.
04
Study must lead to obedience and love
Colossians 3:16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.
James warns against hearing without doing. Bible study that only increases a person’s ability to criticize others has missed its purpose. The Word should produce repentance, worship, love for the brethren, courage, and faithfulness.
The right response is prayerful and teachable: ask what the passage says, how it fits the whole counsel of God, what it reveals about Christ, and how it calls the reader to believe and obey.
Study also belongs in the life of the church. Fellow believers can help expose a mistaken reading, encourage obedience, and keep knowledge from becoming detached from love.
