The armor of God is not a ritual by which believers gain spiritual power. Paul’s command is given to the church as she stands in the strength of the Lord. Every piece is tied to what God has provided: truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, His Word, and prayer.
READ THE KEY PASSAGES
Begin with what
Scripture says.
Ephesians 6:11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Ephesians 6:13Take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Ephesians 6:17Take... the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
01
The armor belongs to God
Ephesians 6:14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.
Paul does not tell believers to invent armor. It is God’s armor, given to people whose strength is in the Lord and in the power of His might.
This prevents the passage from becoming self-reliance. Standing begins with what God has done in Christ and with the truth He has given, not with a Christian trying to feel strong.
The armor of God is not a formula to recite or a set of physical objects with spiritual power. Paul uses the soldier’s equipment to describe the protection God supplies to those who stand in Christ.
02
Truth and righteousness guard the life
Ephesians 6:15Your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.
The belt of truth and breastplate of righteousness belong together. A lie opens the heart to confusion; unrighteousness leaves the conscience exposed.
The righteousness here cannot be separated from Christ, who is the believer’s righteousness, nor from the obedient life His grace produces. False doctrine and tolerated sin both weaken a person’s stand.
Truth holds the believer together because Satan works through lies. The Christian must know what God has said and refuse the unstable ground of accusation, distortion, and self-deception.
03
The gospel, faith, and salvation give stability
Ephesians 6:16Above all, taking the shield of faith.
The gospel of peace makes believers ready to stand and to bear witness. The shield of faith receives God’s promises against the fiery darts of accusation, fear, and temptation.
The helmet of salvation turns the mind toward what Christ has secured. Assurance is not presumption; it is confidence in the Savior and a refusal to let accusation replace the gospel.
Righteousness and faith do not refer to personal confidence in moral success. Believers stand in the righteousness provided by Christ and continue to trust the God who is faithful to His promises.
04
The Word and prayer make the stand active
Ephesians 6:18Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.
The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. Jesus answered temptation with Scripture rightly used, not with vague spiritual language.
Paul immediately calls for prayer. The armor is not a solitary exercise. The church prays for one another, speaks the Word, and stands together in the conflict.
Prayer keeps the whole picture dependent on God. The armor is worn in the context of the church, where believers are called to stand together rather than face spiritual conflict as isolated individuals.

The armor of God is God’s provision for a church standing in a hostile world: truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer. It directs believers away from fear and toward steadfast trust in Christ.
