What Does It Mean to Walk by the Spirit?

A study of the Spirit-led Christian life: not a passing feeling, but holy dependence expressed in truth, obedience, and fruit.

Galatians 5:16–26 · Romans 8:1–14 · Ephesians 5:15–21
Holy SpiritChristian Living

To walk by the Spirit is not to wait for a private feeling that overrides Scripture, nor to claim a life beyond conflict with sin. Galatians describes a real conflict between the flesh and the Spirit. The Spirit leads believers away from the works of the flesh and forms the character of Christ in them through the truth He has given.

READ THE KEY PASSAGES

Begin with what
Scripture says.

Galatians 5:16Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:22–23But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance.

Romans 8:14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

01

The Spirit and flesh are at war

Galatians 5:17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.

Paul does not describe the Christian life as effortless calm. The flesh desires against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh. A believer should not be surprised by temptation, nor should he call a sinful desire harmless because it remains present.

The conflict does not mean the flesh is equal to the Spirit or that defeat is inevitable. The indwelling Spirit gives the believer a new power and direction. He is called to resist sin, not surrender to it as though grace had made holiness unnecessary.

The conflict with the flesh does not make a believer abnormal or defeated. It shows why the Spirit’s power and leading are necessary every day.

02

Walking by the Spirit is governed by Scripture

Romans 8:13If ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth who glorifies Christ. He does not contradict the Word He inspired, excuse sin, or create a rival doctrinal authority beside Scripture. A claim that a person is ‘led by the Spirit’ must be tested by the character of Christ and the written Word.

This does not make the Spirit distant from daily decisions. He gives wisdom, conviction, comfort, and strength. But He never leads a believer into what Scripture forbids or away from the Lordship of Christ.

The Spirit’s leading always agrees with the Word He inspired. He never authorizes sin, weakens Christ’s lordship, or gives a rival gospel.

03

The Spirit puts sin to death

Ephesians 5:18Be filled with the Spirit.

Romans says that through the Spirit believers mortify the deeds of the body. This is active language. Christians identify and resist sins of thought, speech, desire, and action; they do not merely name them as weaknesses and keep them close.

Mortification is not legalistic self-punishment and cannot establish justification. It is the Spirit-enabled response of those already in Christ. The believer fights sin because grace has made him God’s own, not in order to make God accept him.

Putting sin to death is serious work, but it is not self-punishment. It is the Spirit-enabled response of people already received by grace.

04

The Spirit bears Christlike fruit

John 16:14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

The fruit of the Spirit is not spectacle or self-advertisement. It is love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, and self-control. These qualities grow over time as the Spirit conforms believers to Christ.

A moment of excitement is not a substitute for this fruit. Nor should a slow, struggling believer despair because growth is gradual. The question is whether the Spirit’s work is directing the life toward truth, holiness, love, and the glory of Christ.

Fruit often grows quietly through repeated obedience. The question is not whether every struggle ends instantly, but whether the life is being drawn toward Christ’s character.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
