The ascension is not a minor ending scene after the resurrection. The risen Jesus was bodily received into heaven, where He is exalted at the Father’s right hand. His departure did not mean abandonment. It marked the beginning of His present heavenly ministry and fixed the church’s hope on His promised return.
READ THE KEY PASSAGES
Begin with what
Scripture says.
Acts 1:9While they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
Hebrews 4:14We have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God.
Acts 1:11This same Jesus... shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
01
The ascension confirms the bodily risen Christ
Luke 24:51While he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
Acts records that the disciples saw Jesus taken up and received by a cloud. The event did not erase His humanity. The One who ascended is the same Jesus who rose bodily from the grave.
This matters because Christian hope is not escape from embodied life into a vague spiritual future. Christ remains the incarnate, risen Son. As God the Son is omnipresent; as the risen Man He is bodily in heaven until the time of His return.
The ascension is Christ’s exaltation, not His departure from usefulness. The crucified and risen Son now reigns at the Father’s right hand.
02
The ascension is Christ’s exaltation
Ephesians 4:8When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
The ascended Christ is not absent because He lost His place in the world. He is exalted. The right hand of God speaks of honor, authority, approval, and power. The crucified and risen Savior reigns as Lord.
His exaltation reverses the world’s judgment of Him. Men rejected and condemned Him; the Father raised and received Him. The church worships a living, reigning Christ rather than preserving only the memory of a teacher who has gone.
His bodily ascent confirms the reality of His resurrection and prepares the church to await His bodily return.
03
The ascended Christ serves His people
Hebrews 9:24Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands... but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.
Hebrews says Christ entered heaven itself to appear in the presence of God for us. His sacrifice is finished; it need not be repeated. Yet His priestly ministry continues as He represents His people before the Father.
This gives help to weak believers. Their access to God does not depend on a flawless day, a perfect prayer, or their ability to represent themselves. They have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens.
The ascended Christ gives gifts to His church and governs history as Lord. No earthly ruler has the final authority He possesses.
04
The ascension directs the church toward mission and return
John 14:2–3I go to prepare a place for you... I will come again.
Before His ascension, Jesus commissioned His disciples to be witnesses in the power of the Holy Spirit. His heavenly session does not remove the church from earthly obedience; it supplies the Lordship, Spirit, and hope needed for that mission.
The angels also promised that this same Jesus will return in like manner. The ascension therefore keeps the church from confusing Christ’s present heavenly reign with the future visible completion of His kingdom. He reigns now, and He will come again.
The ascension directs hope upward without making Christians careless about earth. They serve faithfully here because their King reigns and will return.
