What Is Spiritual Warfare?

A study of the believer’s real conflict with the devil, the flesh, and the world under the victory and authority of Christ.

Ephesians 6:10–20 · 1 Peter 5:6–11 · James 4:1–10
Holy Spirit

Spiritual warfare is real, but Scripture does not make Christians fearful spectators of a hidden world. The devil opposes God, tempts, accuses, deceives, and seeks to divide. The flesh and the world also press against faithfulness. Yet Christ has won the decisive victory, and His people stand under His authority.

READ THE KEY PASSAGES

Begin with what
Scripture says.

Ephesians 6:12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers... against spiritual wickedness in high places.

1 Peter 5:8–9Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith.

James 4:7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

01

The conflict is spiritual, not against people

2 Corinthians 10:3–4Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal.)

Ephesians says believers do not wrestle against flesh and blood. Human beings are never the ultimate enemy to be hated, manipulated, or treated as targets.

This corrects a dangerous misuse of spiritual warfare. Christians may resist error, injustice, and temptation firmly, while still loving people and seeking their good.

Spiritual warfare is the real conflict between the believer and the devil’s opposition, the world’s rebellion, and the pull of the flesh. It is not a license to blame every difficulty on a demon or to ignore personal responsibility for sin.

02

The enemy works through deception and temptation

1 John 4:4Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

The devil is a liar and an accuser. He seeks to draw people away from God’s Word, to make sin attractive, to foster despair, and to divide the church.

Scripture never gives permission to blame every sinful choice on demonic activity. Believers are responsible to repent, refuse the flesh, and resist the devil in faith.

Christ has already won the decisive victory through His death and resurrection. Believers fight from that victory, not in an effort to establish it by fear, ritual, or personal strength.

03

Christ has the decisive victory

Colossians 2:15Having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

The cross was not a narrow private event. Christ disarmed hostile powers and rose as Lord. Satan remains active, but he is not equal to God and does not control the final outcome.

That truth creates sobriety without panic. The believer’s confidence is not in a technique, a dramatic experience, or personal boldness. It is in the risen Christ.

The ordinary weapons are the truth of God’s Word, prayer, faith, obedience, and life in the church. Scripture gives no pattern for fascination with dark powers or confidence in invented spiritual techniques.

04

Believers resist by submission and truth

Ephesians 4:27Neither give place to the devil.

James puts submission to God before resistance to the devil. The ordinary weapons are God’s Word, prayer, faith, obedience, repentance, and life in the church.

Spiritual warfare is often less spectacular than people expect. It is seen when a Christian rejects a lie, confesses sin, forgives, stands for truth, and continues to trust Christ under pressure.

Watchfulness is needed because temptation and deception are real. Yet the Christian’s posture is not panic; it is sober resistance, confidence in God’s power, and steady faithfulness to Christ.
