What Does It Mean That God Is Holy?

A study of God’s incomparable purity and majesty, and why His holiness governs both judgment and grace.

Isaiah 6:1–7 · Revelation 4:8–11 · 1 Peter 1:13–19

God’s holiness is not merely one admirable quality beside His other qualities. Scripture repeatedly places it at the center of worship, judgment, and redemption. To say that God is holy is to confess that He is utterly pure, set apart from every creature and every evil, and worthy of reverent worship.

READ THE KEY PASSAGES

Begin with what
Scripture says.

Isaiah 6:3Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Revelation 4:8Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

1 Peter 1:16Be ye holy; for I am holy.

01

God is unlike every creature

Habakkuk 1:13Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity.

When the seraphim cry ‘Holy, holy, holy,’ they are not saying that God is simply the best member of a familiar class. He is the Creator; everything else is created. He is independent, righteous, true, and perfect in a way no creature is. His holiness includes His incomparable majesty.

This guards us from making God an enlarged version of ourselves. His thoughts, judgments, and ways are never ruled by ignorance, need, or sin. He is not measured by human preference; human thought and conduct must be measured by Him.

God’s holiness is not merely one admirable trait. It names His absolute purity and His unique glory as the Creator.

02

God’s holiness exposes human sin

Isaiah 6:5Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips.

Isaiah’s vision did not make him feel casually inspired. He saw the Lord and immediately confessed his uncleanness. God’s holiness makes sin visible for what it is: not a minor flaw, but rebellion against the One whose character is perfectly good.

That is why a doctrine of God’s love must never make sin light. If God is holy, His judgment is not cruel or excessive. He judges evil as evil. The problem is not that His standard is too high; it is that humanity has fallen short of the glory for which it was made.

Isaiah’s cleansing shows that a sinner cannot approach such holiness on his own terms. Mercy must come from God.

03

Holiness makes grace costly and precious

Hebrews 12:14Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

The holy God does not forgive by ignoring guilt. The altar in Isaiah’s vision points beyond itself to the provision God must make for cleansing. In the gospel, Christ bears sin so that sinners may be forgiven without God denying His own righteousness.

This is why grace is not cheap approval. The cross reveals both the seriousness of sin and the depth of divine mercy. God remains just while justifying the one who believes in Jesus.

God’s holiness gives moral commands their weight. Sin is not simply a private mistake; it is offense against the One who is perfectly pure.

04

God’s people are called to holy living

1 John 1:9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.

Peter grounds the call to holiness in God’s own character and in the costly redemption of Christ’s blood. Holiness is not a way to purchase acceptance. It is the fitting life of people who have been redeemed by the holy God.

The call reaches private desire, speech, work, worship, money, and relationships. It also calls for humility, because Christians pursue holiness only by grace and must never use outward discipline as a reason to boast.

The gospel does not soften God’s holiness. At the cross, God provides cleansing through the sacrifice He Himself gives.
