How Should Christians Test What They Hear?

A study of receiving teaching with humility while testing every claim by the written Word of God.

Acts 17:11 · 1 John 4:1 · 1 Thessalonians 5:21

Christians are called to listen, learn, and receive faithful teaching. They are also called to test what they hear. These duties do not compete. Humility listens carefully; faithfulness tests every claim by the Scripture God breathed out.

READ THE KEY PASSAGES

Begin with what
Scripture says.

Acts 17:11These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

1 John 4:1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1 Thessalonians 5:21Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

01

Test teaching by Scripture

Isaiah 8:20To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

The Bereans received the message readily and searched the Scriptures daily. Their example rejects proud refusal to learn and passive acceptance of every confident teacher. The written Word is the final court of appeal because it is God-breathed.

That standard applies to every teacher, including a favored pastor, a respected author, a long-held tradition, and a speaker whose manner is persuasive. Christians honor faithful teachers by receiving their labor gratefully, but the teacher remains beneath the Word he teaches.

02

Test the message about Christ

2 Timothy 3:16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

First John warns about false spirits, and Paul warns that even an angelic messenger must not be received if he brings another gospel. This is not suspicion over minor questions. It is a command to preserve the truth concerning God, Christ, sin, grace, faith, and salvation.

The gospel cannot be altered by adding human merit to Christ’s work or by removing the call to trust the true Christ. A message may use biblical language and still change the meaning of grace, faith, repentance, holiness, or salvation. Scripture calls the church to recognize that danger plainly.

03

Test method as well as conclusion

Galatians 1:8Though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you... let him be accursed.

A teacher may use many Bible references while handling them badly. Verses can be removed from context, symbols can be given invented meanings, and theological systems can be allowed to control the text. Ask not only whether a conclusion sounds right, but whether Scripture establishes it in context.

The method matters because a correct-sounding conclusion reached by a careless method gives no protection for the next question. Christians should learn to see how a passage is being read: its immediate context, its place in the book, related Scriptures, and the distinction between what is said and what is assumed.

04

Hold fast to what is good

2 Timothy 4:3–4The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine... And they shall turn away their ears from the truth.

Testing is not endless suspicion. It has a positive purpose: hold fast to what is good. The church needs faithful teachers, patient study, correction, and encouragement. When doctrine is sound, believers may receive it with gratitude and build their lives on the truth God has spoken.

Discernment should therefore make the believer steadier, not more cynical. The purpose is not to win arguments or distrust every Christian who reaches a different conclusion on a difficult matter. It is to guard the gospel, love truth, and remain willing to be corrected by Scripture.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

Questions for further reading.

  1. 01

How did the Bereans combine openness with testing?

  2. 02

What makes a false gospel serious even when the messenger is impressive?

  3. 03

Have you examined the context and method behind a teaching you have received?

Read patiently. Let God’s Word speak.

Testing teaching by Scripture is not rebellion against faithful teachers. It is obedience to the God who gave His Word. Christians should listen humbly, search carefully, reject what contradicts Scripture, and hold firmly to the truth.
